Module 7: Facilitating with Technology

Module 7 focused more on how you can use technology as a teacher, as opposed to how your students will use it in the classroom. In this module, you created facilitation and management resources that will help you prepare and stay on track as you facilitate this type of teaching and learning with your students. As you reflect on what you have learned and created tonight and throughout the course, please answer the following questions and respond to at least one colleague:

  • In what roles do you see technology fulfilling in your classroom?
  • What 21st century skills do you feel you will be the most apparent in your classroom as a result of planning this unit?

Please respond to the following questions in your personal blog:
  • What do you feel has been the most useful thing you will take away from this course?
  • Do you think you will plan units that follow a similar format to this one in the future?
  • What features from this type of curriculum design might you use again?
  • Is there anything else you hope to learn from this course before it is completed?

  1. In what roles do you see technology fulfilling in your classroom?
I see technology helping me control weekly reading groups and helping students work through the thinking process in their own ways. I know that students learn differently and by giving them the technology skills they are able to facilitate their learning skills. Technology also gives my students the chance to experience things that they may not experience outside the classroom environment.

What 21st century skills do you feel you will be the most apparent in your classroom as a result of planning this unit?
I think that students will be able to blog on their own and create a powerpoint with some help. Students will be able to research different areas around the world to influence their work and how they are learning their skills. Students will also be able to differentiate between lower level thinking and high level thinking to create student friendly and controled learning.

  2. This module allowed me to see that I would be a facilitator to my students, and that they would be more responsible for their learning in the classroom. As a teacher, I would be taking a less active role leaving room for the students to pick up and be more active.

The greatest 21st century skill that would be apparent would have to be the use of technology in my classroom. Having the computers and projector at the front of the classroom, alerts those walking by how active the class is with using technology. Students will also be more excited to be part of the learning, because they would be able to experiment with new sites and have exposure to more creative outlets.

  4. In what roles do you see technology fulfilling in your classroom?

Mainly, I would like to see technology engaging students' creativity and ability to be able to be fluent users of technology. Those students who are fully capable users of technology will be the most successful not only in school, but in life.
What 21st century skills do you feel you will be the most apparent in your classroom as a result of planning this unit?

To be able to think critically and collaborate, be flexible and adaptable. Students will be able to demonstrate (mainly) these skills in order to successfully conclude this assignment.

  5. I see technology fulfilling in the classroom by helping the student use various tools to explore and learn with other than the traditional book. Students can also share their ideas and thoughts with others and get a response in an acceptable time frame.
The 21st century skills that will be apparent are using a variety of sites for exploring and collaboration for the students. By using these tools and sites the students can be better equipped for the future forms of communications and expectations from employers.

  6. To Darcyllh1223--

I like what you said about the fact that students need to take on an excitement about their leaning by being allowed to have freedom and be creative...using technology will allow this creativity and freedom to flourish with your great students!

I see technology in my classroom as a tool to differenciate my instruction and a way to vary learning so that students don't get bored.

What 21st century skills do you feel you will be the most apparent in your classroom as a result of planning this unit?

Communication and collaboration skills as well as some technology form of a presentation.

  9. In what roles do you see technology fulfilling in your classroom? I see technology in my classroom as a tool. A resource to research, a tool to communicate. A tool to incorproate different ways to present, and collaborte with each other.
What 21st century skills do you feel you will be the most apparent in your classroom as a result of planning this unit? Communication would be the apparent 21st century skill that I will use in my classroom as a tool. I will be able to communicate with the students and the students will be able to collaborate with eachother through communication.

  11. To Tkeough: I like the idea of this unit will allow students to experience technology that they may not be exposed to outside of the classroom! Many of our kids do not have technology at home.

  12. Bethany:

I think when you stated technology is a tool in the classroom is so appropriate. It is a resource which can help with the students learning. It is a resource to help communicate and talk collaboratively with one another.

  13. In what roles do you see technology fulfilling in your classroom?
As a research tool, an incentive, practice and application tool-basically a part-time teacher.

What 21st century skills do you feel you will be the most apparent in your classroom as a result of planning this unit?
The ability to navigate a computer screen, to recognize and use a keyboard to communicate, to use a mouse, to create and demonstrate learning with the use of technology.

  14. In what roles do you see technology fulfilling in your classroom?
    - I see technology providing students a variety of resources to learn through website games (interactive) and group projects for example. It provides students a new & exciting way to learn.
What 21st century skills do you feel you will be the most apparent in your classroom as a result of planning this unit?
    - I see technology being more student centered. Students will be "doing" more independent tech work versus whole group while I am "doing" the tech work. Our students are capable and can do more when given the necessary tools/resources (question, create, cycle, evaulate).

  15. @Gabe - I like that you said "incentive" because I agree than many students look forward to using technology. Technology is exciting and it can be an incentive for some who need motivation.

  16. Technology can fulfill many roles in my classroom. It will engage students in the learning and allow them to be more creative with their end products. It will allow them to show what they know by using different learning tools. It will be something students can use that will be more student centered. It will allow students to learn how to work cooperatively with others using technology.

The 21st century skills that will be the most apparent in my classroom as a result of planning this unit will be self-direction. I want to teach the students to be as independent as possible in completing tasks and activities. I want them to (with scaffolding and prompting) to be able to evaluate and communicate effectively about cooperative problem-based learning projects.

  17. @Holly I like that you said that it provides them with engaging tools like websites with games to practice their skills.

  18. Michelle: I agree with using the computers to differenciate your plans. Students will be working at their own pace but have a deadline to finish the assignment.

  19. In what roles do you see technology fulfilling in your classroom?
So far my students have absolutely loved having the E3 laptops in our room. It has allowed the students to discover various websites, search engines and to become excited about their learning. Not only will the enthusiasm level rise, but the students will begin to take more ownership of their learning. I'm also excited to start using a docu-cam in two weeks that I wrote a grant for.

What 21st century skills do you feel you will be the most apparent in your classroom as a result of planning this unit?
All students are actively engaged using the student laptops for collaboration, research, and creating multi-media presentations. We use the computer/webcam and proxima to Skype with community leaders. Technology has been a weakness for me in the past, so I'm excited to implement blogs, student emails and other creative resources I've learned in this class!

  20. In what roles do you see technology fulfilling in your classroom?

I think technology will help in assessing the students and their learning. It will allow students to be more accountable for their work. It will also help student to learn collaboratively. They will have to work together to accomplish their goal and reach the final product.

What 21st century skills do you feel you will be the most apparent in your classroom as a result of planning this unit?

I think the student’s involvement and their learning will be huge from this unit. Students will be conducting the research and apply the information they learn. It will also allow students organize their information they collect and be able to present it to other students so there is peer to peer learning.

  21. Holly - I agree with you that using technology creates a more student-centered environment. Students do the work and we need to learn to facilitate more and encourage the students to work through their thought processes.

  22. In what roles do you see technology fulfilling in your classroom?
The level of engagement of my students will increase and they will become more creative with the use of technology in the classroom. Technology will also allow students to become cooperative learners...

What 21st century skills do you feel you will be the most apparent in your classroom as a result of planning this unit?
I think that my classroom will become more independent while they are researching projects as well as creating many different types of multi-media presentations. We will be using skype during our unit as well student emails throughout the rest of the year. We plan on incorporating google docs as well. :)

  23. •In what roles do you see technology fulfilling in your classroom? I like "taking trips" on the computer. The students in my classroom don't take family vacations and go see the world. Therefore, they do ot get exposed to multiple experiences in life outside of TV, the house, or school. When we can go on the internet andplay a game, practice phonics, make a powerpoint, watch a movie, or travel on the map, students eat that up! It is great when we do something new, to see the eyes get big and participation increase. I love when they ask to go on the computers!! It is a great feeling. This really motivates them and me to teach them to use the computer as a tool. What a benefit it will be in their future!!
•What 21st century skills do you feel you will be the most apparent in your classroom as a result of planning this unit? I think overall learning HOW to use the computer; logging on, typing, knowing how to navigate my teacher website....this will be most apparent. Not only does it motivate me to teach them how to use the computer, but it motivates them to want to know how to use a computer. This answer pretty much ties in with the above answer, as well.

@Tiffany-I like that you will use the computers to collaborate in your classroom! Maybe one day, the kindergarteners will be abel to do the saem thing. Until then, I like what Gsabe said about using it as an incentive, for now. I also think the students, at any level, should be on the computer daily. It is tough for out level, Kinder, when we had to monitor them almost consantly when nevigating the Internet. =)

  24. •In what roles do you see technology fulfilling in your classroom?
Technology will fullfill many roles in my classroom, the ability to communicate with someone in another location via webcams, this can be utilized for SS, and reading fluency, readng from room to room without even leaving your classroom. Eliminating paper pileups as students take on a more active role on the computer either through computer assignments or presentations created onlinel. The use of doc camera, and digital camera to record and monitor changes for science, reading for stories. Students will be on their own helping me to pave the way for the many ways that this can happen.
•What 21st century skills do you feel you will be the most apparent in your classroom as a result of planning this unit?

Basic computer skills, such as keyboarding, shortcuts, software and hardware savvy. The students I am finding are quickly becoming the teachers in many aspects because their learning curve on the software and hardware is remarkable. I am also utilizing our School Computer Guru Mr. McMahon in training the students in differing tools and software so they are able to come back and help in small groups on these issues. Their is a world of opportunity out their.

I wholeheartedly agree collaboration is the key and the computers will allow that to happen.

  26. CALLING ON THE NAME OF THE LORD?

What is the meaning of calling on the name of the Lord? Many assume that believing in Jesus and saying a form of a sinner's prayer constitutes, calling on the name of the Lord. The problem with that theory is none of the conversions under the New Covenant support that assumption. Not one time is anyone ever told to believe and say the sinner's prayer in order to be saved.

The apostle Peter on the Day of Pentecost quoted the prophet Joel, Acts 2:21 And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved." (NKJV)

The apostle Peter preached the first gospel sermon under the New Covenant. Peter did not tell the 3000 converts to believe and say the sinner's prayer.

Peter preached the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. He preached Jesus as both Lord and Christ. When they heard this they asked Peter and the rest of the brethren what they should do?(Acts 2:22-37) Peter told them what to do. Acts 2:38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.(NKJV)

How did the 3000 on the Day of Pentecost call on the name of the Lord and become saved?
    1. They believed that Jesus was both Lord and Christ.
    2. They believed that God raised Jesus from the grave.
    3. They repented. Repentance is a change of heart. Repentance means to be converted so that God may forgive your sins. Repentance is to make the intellectual commitment to turn from sin and turn toward God. (Acts 3:19, Acts 2:38)
    4. They were immersed in water (baptized) so that their sins could be forgiven.

How did the 3000 on the Day of Pentecost not call on the name of the Lord?
    1. They did not say a sinner's prayer.
    2. Not one person was asked to pray for forgiveness.
    3. Not one single man was told to be baptized as a testimony of his faith.
    4. No one was told that water baptism was a just an act of obedience.
    5. No one was informed they were saved the very minute they believed.
    6. Not one person was told that water baptism was not essential for the forgiveness of sins.
    7. Not one person was told to be baptized so they could join a denominational church.

Jesus said he that believes and is baptized shall be saved. (Mark 16"16) Jesus did not say he who believes and says a sinner's prayer shall be saved.
