Module 6: Planning for Student Success

This week we focused on creating accommodations for diverse learners and supporting student self-direction through the use of formative assessments and other student support resources. As you reflect on the work you have completed today, please answer the following questions:

  • How can I facilitate a student-centered classroom?
  • How can I use technology to support this instructional practice?
  • What new ideas or concepts have I taken from today's session?

Once you have answered the questions above and responded to at least one colleague, post a detailed response to the following prompt in your personal blog:

This module has helped me think about self-directed learners and the role of differentiation in the following ways….

  1. I facilitate a student-centered classroom by allowing my students help lead specific assignments and be there as the moderator. I would be there as a resource and help when there are issues.
I can use technology to support this instructional practice by having the lesson centered around various. The technology also is beneficial with meeting accommodations for the students.
The new ideas I have taken from tonight's s are how to create different accommodations for different style learners and have them be attentive in the class.

  2. How can I facilitate a student-centered classroom?
I can give students more of a choice in how they discover and learn content. I can provide opportunities for students to be more hands on and interactive with technology. I have to give up some control =)
How can I use technology to support this instructional practice?
I can give students guidlines (or perameters) to work within. For example, I can create the template for students to implement their work and voicethread but then give them the freedom to create their own slide. There is structure but freedom and choice within their projects.
What new ideas or concepts have I taken from today's session?
I learned the importance of creating resources for the differing student levels. For example, I may create a worksheet for one student to circle the needs of a plant (water, soil, etc) and then another student can draw their own picture of the needs. Students need different resources and I am to provide the resources to facilitate their learning.

  3. I can facilitate a student-centered classroom and use technology to support this instructional practice by providing scaffolding to students in the way of forms, templates and starters (or sparks!. I can incorporate self guiding checklists so the student has a timeline of what is to be done and when.

Some ideas or concepts have I taken from today's session is the use of templates and starters and using checklists throughout the unit rathar than at the end!

  6. How can I facilitate a student-centered classroom?
I can facilitate a student-centered classroom by creating centers and student directed activities that give the students the ability to use their own thoughts and abilities.
How can I use technology to support this instructional practice?
I can use technology to support this instructional practice by making sure that students are getting the most from their computer time. I will make sure that the students have tabs under their own internet and sign in so that they can immediately get on and get started based on the skills for that week.

What new ideas or concepts have I taken from today's session? I have realized that the students can take on more responsibility than I really give them. I am feeling better about letting go of some of the control and making parts of the day more student directed.

  8. Ms. Orozco- I agree with the giving up control and using scaffolding and templates to make a more student directed and student centered classroom. It makes more sense to give over a little bit of control,to create a better learning environment.

  9. How can I facilitate a student-centered classroom? Give students assessment and see where each child is, allow them to do group/individual activites with timelines and rubrics. Give them choices on the end result.

How can I use technology to support this instructional practice? Show students several different ways to create projects for them to create as an end product, also provide feedback through blogs or emails.

What new ideas or concepts have I taken from today's session? I really like the forms and the check list that were on the Intell website, that allowed us to take, change and use in our unit plan. I can use it the group forms for peer feedback.

  10. I can facilitate student centered learning by offering more hands on learning and using technology because students are very interested in using computers.
I can use technology to help facilitate learning by have centers that have students work, test, or create things linked to current learning objectives.
I have used competer centers to involve students to complete work and test.

  11. How can I facilitate a student-centered classroom? I can use extension menus or choice activity menus to give the students some choices. Along with the menus, the students can use checklists and rubrics to monitor their progress.
How can I use technology to support this instructional practice? I'll get back to this. =)
What new ideas or concepts have I taken from today's session?

  12. How can I facilitate a student-centered classroom?
I can create an environment for inquiry. I can have the children ask the questions and try to answer them thru observation and research.

How can I use technology to support this instructional practice?
I can use the internet to research questions and topics with the children.

What new ideas or concepts have I taken from today's session?
I was able to review the multiple intelligences. I have not looked at them since college and they have changed!

  13. How can I facilitate a student-centered classroom?
To create a student-centered classroom I can have the students become more hands on and involved in their own learning and outcomes, provide more choices for the students and allow them to work in more cooperative groups.

How can I use technology to support this instructional practice?
Students can use technology. They would have the freedom to pick and choose what type of projects they want to create using different guidelines that have been set in the classroom.

What new ideas or concepts have I taken from today's session?
I plan on making checklists and evaluations for students to complete about themselves as well as their group members. I think this will keep them focused and on task.

  14. Holly~ I agree with you about setting guidelines for students to work within but then allowing them the freedom and choice for their projects. Students will be able to use their own individuality in them but still meeting the expectations of the class.

  15. How can I facilitate a student-centered classroom?
By asking open ended questions to encourage student discussion with each other and away from me. Giving topics to research and letting the students come to their own conclusions and findings. Also by creating hands on activities students can do independently or with their group.

How can I use technology to support this instructional practice?
By allowing students the opportunity to use the laptops throughout the day in centers, research projects, and creating presentations.

What new ideas or concepts have I taken from today's session?
Reviewing how students learn through their multiple intelligences was a great reminder. This can aid in how I group students to compliment one another so. Also creating individual and group checklists to help students stay on task and focused on what they are suppose to accomplish.

  16. How can I facilitate a student-centered classroom? Having the students be accountable for their own action. They can also evaluate themselves in the group activities and use peer to peer evaluations.

How can I use technology to support this instructional practice? Having students to use laptops or desktops. I can create questions which students will need to work together on the computer and internet to find the answers.

What new ideas or concepts have I taken from today's session? To make sure the students are accountable for their product. Students are actually harder on themselves than I can be. It allows them accountable for their own actions.

  18. How can I facilitate a student-centered classroom? Allow students to take more and more control of learning in the classroom, all the while, monitoring and directing them to "hit" all the objectives.
How can I use technology to support this instructional practice? Making sure students use different technologies allows them to become more technologically savvy and encourages creativity and cognitive processes.

  19. What new ideas or concepts have I taken from today's session?
Tanya--I like and agree with your idea about reviewing how students learn through their multiple intelligences. Also creating checklists...this is not a difficult task and is so helpful for students to stay on track.

  20. I forgot to finish my blog..duh!
How can I use technology to support this instructional practice? I have made extension menus to support technology use in my classroom. When students are finished with work (theoretically) they can use the menu to choose another activity, extending what he/she has done in class that day. Mostly, we use websites to practice phonics andphonemic awareness. I woudl like to use the computer more for the students to create an extension of concepts in class...example: (on TuxPaint)Create a picture that represents one of your vocabulary words.
What new ideas or concepts have I taken from today's session? I have learned that students can "take a test" on the computer in many ways. It does not have to be multiple choice, but it can be a response to a movie, creatign a project after listening to a book...these things can be done on a google doc, presentation, oovoo, animoto, etc. There are many ways to asses rather than pencil and paper.

RE:Tanya-I like your ideas about students facilitating their own learning and responses. It is so hard to let them go on their own, but much needed and they are very capable!

  21. •How can I facilitate a student-centered classroom?
Facilitation a student centered classroom allows students to take ownership of their learning. If through menus, rubrics, webquests and such they are able to guide and pace their work while ensuring they are meeting necessary guidelines and still somewhat structured in their learning.

•How can I use technology to support this instructional practice?
Use of the laptops has opened up a whole new portal of ideas, there are many ways to document and record electronically that the old paper and pencil way is becoming obsolete. Using digital cameras to record changes in science or act out a play, scene by scene to upload to a movie. Having the students take tests online and sending their scores via e-mail is also another way. Having the test online also allows me to access those students who miss school to access from home.

•What new ideas or concepts have I taken from today's session?
The use of rubrics and templates to guide student learning. Even though we want them to be independent if they don't know our expectations they are doomed.

  23. The best thing that I can do to encourage a student-facilitated classroom is to invite the students to be part of their learning, and allow them to make some of the daily decisions that we make in the classroom. This opportunity will open the door for them to step up, and become more active in their learning environment. This will also allow me to step back, and allow the students the chance to become stronger in their learning and their work. Technology would play a large part in this process, because the students would be accountable to me using the computers and other technology that we have in the classroom. I would be able to monitor and modify their work, if I felt that they could be doing something better with that. Finding websites that would encourage their work, would also be a great way for me to encourage this environment.

Tonight's lesson gave me a great reminder that I need to always be aware of the various learning styles, and those effects on the student's learning. Being able to focus on the greater picture of the child's learning should be the center of what is happening. Not every child learns the same, and I need to remind myself of that each day as I walk in the room and teach a lesson.

  24. Erin- I agree with your feelings about letting go of the control in your classroom when it comes to students doing their own thing. It's a challenge to have full trust in what they are doing, and to know that they can have their own say in their learning. Maybe one day we'll be okay with that:)

  25. How can I facilitate a student-centered classroom? Students can become more invloved in their own learning and outcomes through more hands on learning which would provide a variety of choices. The different choices would meet a variety of learning style needs.
How can I use technology to support this instructional practice? Thecnology provides a wealth of choices for students to learn and create. Students will learn about and use a variety of websites to create a presentation showing their understanding of the lesson.
What new ideas or concepts have I taken from today's session? The self guided check list is a great tool. It will help student understand the expectations of the lesson
