Module 1: Teaching With PBL

Module 1 consisted of researching and discussing Problem -Based learning and its place in the 21st Century classroom. Now that you have had time to think about this topic, please reply with your answers to the following questions:

•How can projects help my students meet standards and develop 21st century skills?
•How can I use projects to enhance student learning?

Once you have posted, reply to the post of at least one other participant. You may ask them a question, comment on their good ideas, or even disagree (respectfully), as long as you are saying more then just, "I agree" or "Good job". Before entering your comments, please make sure to start with the person's name you are replying to, such as "@ Melodie" or "To Melodie".

Next, you will create your first post in your own blog. Please begin with the following prompt:

This module has made me think about my role as an instructional designer in the following ways...

Make sure to check back before our next meeting to read my response to your first post!

  1. Projects can help students meet the standards by connecting with real life situations for retention.
I can use the projects to help my students have a better appreciation of the standard and help the realize the importance of the material covered.

  2. I feel that problem based learning can help my students create a sense of control over their learning. The students are able to see themselves as the teachers and not just as the learners. It will also help them create items that are technology based to enhance their learning and the learning of other students. The students will enhance their learning by starting a problem based that they are interested in. The more interested the students are in their learning, the more they get out of it.

  3. Projects can help my students develop problem solving skills. I believe we are in an in between era of parenting; parents want their kids to be successful, but don't want to give their (young) children too much freedom to make mistakes. In the classroom, students need to be able to make mistakes, but be guided to fix them and "figure out" a solution. Project based learning allows students to know where they are going to end up, but not exactly HOW to get there. =)

  4. PBL's will allow my student to become active in their own learning. Doing PBL's students will self learn the standards and connect their team learning to their life. I will use PBL's to help my student become more advanced on real life education and become self explorers.

  5. Problem-based learning allows the students the opportunity to become more responsible for their own learning. Instead of having the teacher present the information, students now become the ones responsible for presenting. Having students become more hands-on with their learning gives them the chance to cement knowledge. Plus more standards will be hit, because problem-based learning can be used to integrate the subjects.

  6. @ Journey to Tech....I like what you said regarding student retention. I agree that the connections to real life allow students to "make learning real" and it will stick with them longer than drill and kill. @tkeough....I can appreciate the students having a sense of control over their learning. As adults, most of us don't want to be told what or how to do things, either if we might have a better (in our own opinion) way to do things. If we create the solution, we retain the genius of it!! =)

  7. Problem-based learning can help my students meet standards and develop 21st century skills because it is a big motivator and actively engages students in their own learning. For Kindergarten, the focus will be on students knowing the basics of technology and then moving towards integrating more technology tools and programs into the content areas.

I will use problem-based learning to enhance student learning by posing questions and problems that are developmentally appropriate and having students cooperate to find a solution.

  8. Students need to be able relate what they do in class for an assignment to what happens in their real lives. Teachers must create a learning environment where students can see relationships between what they are doing in class to their real life experiences.

How can I use projects to enhance student learning?
I can use create essential questions that are meaningful to students and allow them to explore ways of understanding new things in new ways and be able to direct their learning so that they meet the standards.

  9. Project based learning when strategically planned to align with standards allows students to take ownership of a given problem and self direct their learning. As facilitator to my students I can guide their learning through engaging and content rich ideas and problems.

  10. ErinDeal-
I love your opinion and view on how the parents are wanting their students to succeed but are not willing to let them make the mistakes that they need to make. It is amazing how much students know but parents won't let them achieve computer wise because they have their own fear of computers and technology.

  11. To Erindeal: PBL's will help the students improve their Problem solving skills, which help in curriculum and real life.

  12. TKeough this is a very interesting concept to have the students feel they have more control over their learning by feeling they are the teacher.

  13. Problem-based learning allows students to discover problems individually and encourages them to use higher level of thinking while meeting the standards. Students are more actively engaged in the learning process.

  14. The children can meet standards by solving problems that are related to their lives. They can use technology and the resources of the internet to do this and learn how to solve problems this way independently.

  15. To Lillian: I like that you said "take ownership of a given problem and self direct their learning". The learning is directed towards the students and gives them responsibility in what they learn. They get out of it what they give in to it :-)

  16. @Bethany I like how you said that students will connect problem based learning to their own life. Students will be more engaged in their learning!

  17. darcylh1223, I think you are right about allowing students to have control of their learning. They can acquire more knowledge of something if they are in control...its all about control, isn't it?

  18. Ms. Orozoc, I'm in the same boat with students being in primary grades. Having this experience with computers will allow them to build on their knowledge, and make them more excited about learning!

  19. To Jullia,
Yay, for the engagement of little learners. Keeping them focused and motivated is important so they will remember!

I think it is fantastic that you are bringing technology to our students at an early age. As a fourth grade teacher I have alot of students who are new to computers and it will be great if all teachers follow your lead.

  21. Problem based learning will enhance student success in the classroom. The problems will allow students to take ownership of their learning.

  22. PBLs help student engagement and motivates them to explore and learn through modern technology.

As a teacher, I can use their enthusiasm with technology to "sneak" in targeted learning objectives.
These two things combined will produce structured learning!

  25. problem -base learning teaches children real world situations. Children are given the opportunity to work in cooperative groups and learn from each other by solving problems individuslly. I will use Problem base learing to create problems that challenge students to develop problem solving skills.

I agree students will be more engaged if they are able to connect problems with real life situations.
